Gandikota, popularly known as the "Grand Canyon of India," is a historic village and fort located on the banks of the Pennar River in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. It is famous for its breathtaking gorge formed by the river cutting through the red granite Erramala Hills, creating a landscape strikingly similar to the Grand Canyon in the USA. Gandikota Gorge & Viewpoint is the primary attraction where you can witness the massive red cliffs and the Pennar River flowing 300 feet below. Sunrise and sunset views here are considered essential experiences. Gandikota Fort is a 13th-century stone fortress with a 20-foot tall entrance and 101 bastions. It houses several historical monuments within its walls. Jama Masjid & Mini Charminar are architectural remnants reflecting Islamic styles, including an imposing mosque and a three-storeyed tower. Ancient Temples at Gandikota include the Madhavaraya Swamy Temple (known for its tall gopura) and the Raghunatha Swamy Temple are key historical sites within the fort complex.
